In an era of shrinking tax dollars, many school districts in America say they can't afford career education programs. Ceres Unified School District officials, however, believe that for the sake of students' futures and preparing a skilled labor force, schools like Ceres High School cannot afford to not offer them.

CV will showcase playmakers on both sides of the ball
Central Valley High School's varsity football program had one of the most explosive offenses in the Stanislaus District in 2008, The Hawks averaged 28.1 points and 382 yards per contest.

This year's team could be just as productive-on both sides of the ball.

"We're fast," assistant coach Antone Lopez said. "We're athletic. We're big up front. We're more balanced everywhere. I think we'll be successful."

Ceres Seahawks rebuild
The Ceres Seahawks had a forgettable end to the 2009 Cen-Cal Jr. Football League varsity season.

Ceres appeared headed toward an easy victory against Merced before suffering a stunning collapse. The loss eliminated the Seahawks from playoff contention.

JV Bulldogs win
Ceres High School's junior-varsity football squad pitched a shutout in the first half and held on for a 21-6 victory over Ripon on Friday at Bulldog Stadium.

"It's a great way to start off the season," head coach Clinton Goblirsch said. "It was a total team effort."

Ceres quarterback Blake Hurst completed 9 of 19 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown.

Ceres High School's new-look varsity boys soccer team finished in third place in Pool D at the Pitman tournament last week.

The Bulldogs compiled a 1-2 record at the 16-team event.

Obama's stimulus plan fails to revive economy
Adam Bitely notes that the Obama administration is in more trouble with news that the unemployment situation in the United States has not improved. On Friday morning, the Department of Labor announced that the unemployment rate had remained unchanged in July at 9.5 percent. On top of that, another 131,000 jobs were lost.

Ceres residents make cut for talent show
The talents of at least four Ceres residents will be scrutinized at the "Valley's Got Talent" show set for Friday and Saturday at the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto.

Modeled after the popular "America's Got Talent" TV show, the local version of the show will pit 23 acts against each other for a $1,000 grand prize and two $750 cash awards for runners-up. The winner also will get a spot as an opening act to a big name entertainer.
