Each year the National FFA organization honors FFA members who show the utmost dedication to FFA through their desire to develop leadership potential, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. That honor, the American FFA degree, is bestowed on select individuals.

Cherise A. Azevedo, a member of Central Valley High School's FFA chapter, was awarded the American FFA degree at the 85th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, Ind. The convention, known as the largest student gathering in the nation, occurred Oct. 24-27. She is the first from her school to ever receive the degree, despite having graduated in June.

Azevedo, a student at Modesto Junior College, was one of 275 California recipients receiving American Farmer degrees last month.

To be eligible, FFA members must have earned and productively invested $7,500 through a supervised agricultural experience program in which they initiate, own or hold a professional position in an existing agricultural enterprise. Recipients must also complete 50 community service hours, as well as demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities and community involvement.

Azevedo received a gold American FFA Degree Key plus a certificate after being on stage during the convention.
