Denham brings books to Sinclear School

Sinclear Elementary had a special visitor Wednesday morning.

Congressman Jeff Denham, R-Turlock, met with Kristy Lawrence's second-grade class from 10-10:30 a.m. inside the school's library.

Denham donated a box full of books from the Library of Congress.

"We found out yesterday he would be stopping by," Principal Connie Stark said. "We really appreciate it. He's been at Sinclear before when we opened our school."

Denham sat in a rocking chair while reading from the book "The Pencil" to 25 students during his half-hour visit.

Over the last year, Denham's office has been collecting surplus books from the Library of Congress to help stock and replace books in public schools across the Valley.

"My job is to represent my community," said Denham. "Being able to come here and talk with the kids is fun. It's a very rewarding part of the job."

Librarian Claudette Lee, Ceres School Board members Jim Kinard, Faye Lane and Lourdes Perez, Ceres Unified Supt. Scott Siegel, Deputy Supt. Mary Jones and Assistant Supt. of Student Support Services Jay Simmonds were also present.

Denham also delivered books to Salida Middle School.

"Donating these books is a simple way to help our public schools stock their shelves and replace older books during tough economic times," said Denham.

Denham was recently re-elected to Congress on Nov. 6, defeated Democrat Jose Hernandez in the newly carved District 10. Ceres was in Dennis Cardoza had been representing Ceres in the 18th Congressional District until lines were redrawn because of redistricting. Cardoza quit the seat on Aug. 14, 2012 citing family concerns.

The congressman's Modesto office is accepting requests from school libraries for surplus books by calling 579-5458.
