Bulldogs' varsity cagers bury Tigers

Ceres High School's varsity boys basketball team earned a much-needed win last week.

The Bulldogs avoided dropping to 1-4 in the Western Athletic Conference with a 64-54 win over host Los Banos on Wednesday.

Ceres High improved to 9-10 overall (2-3 WAC).

The Tigers dropped to 4-12, 1-3.

Three Bulldog players scored in double figures against Los Banos, including Jimbo Pernetti (22), Harman Chung (13) and Caden Johnson (13).

Junior Garcia and Jimmy Bates both had four points.

Angel Garcia contributed three points.

Terry Brogdon and Michael Ghimenti finished with two points each.

Abel Reyes added one point.

"We played hard," Ceres High head coach Brian de la Porte said.

Ceres High shot 79 percent (19 of 24) from the charity stripe.

"We were being aggressive and pounding the ball inside," de la Porte said.

The Bulldogs overwhelmed the Tigers from the start.

Ceres High outscored Los Banos 18-7 in the first quarter and led 34-23 at halftime. Pernetti had 14 points, including eight in the opening period.

"That was a pretty solid start," de la Porte said. "We put a lot of pressure on them defensively. We got the ball inside. We hit some outside shots. We controlled the tempo of the game."

The Bulldogs led by as much as 20 points in the second half.

Ceres High will play host to crosstown Central Valley today at 7:30 p.m.

Ceres High has won the last six meetings.

"Our kids will be fired up," de la Porte said. "Their kids will be fired up. There will be a lot of emotion and energy. We're going to have to defend and rebound well."
