Last year Ceres said goodbye to Richland Market after 61 years of continuous family operation, leaving a huge hole in the landscape of Richland Shopping Center.

The vacancy is not for long. Dollar General, which is expanding into the Central Valley market, is remodeling the space to open a Ceres store. A banner in front of the store was the first official public announcement of the move.

Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General Corporation is the nation's largest small-box discount retailer. The chain's website boasts: "We make shopping for everyday needs simpler and hassle-free by offering a carefully edited assortment of the most popular brands at low everyday prices in small, convenient locations."

Dollar General ranks among the largest retailers of brands that include Procter & Gamble, Kimberly Clark, Unilever, Kellogg's, General Mills and Nabisco.

In 2012, Dollar General opened its 10,000th store in Merced. Last year the chain opened a new store in Waterford. It has stores in 40 states, with Texas having the greatest number at 1,142. California has only 29.

Dollar General boasts national sales of approximately $14.8 billion annually.
