Ceres High's and Central Valley's varsity wrestling programs both fell short of their goal of qualifying for the Sac-Joaquin Section Team Dual Championships a week earlier.

"After losing to Central Catholic, we were bummed," Bulldog Gabe Balderas said. "But it put a fire in us. This is the next best thing. It's always good to beat your crosstown rival."

Ceres High won its head-to-head matchup with the Hawks, 42-29, on Wednesday at Central Valley.

Third-place Ceres High (4-2) finished one spot ahead of Central Valley (3-3) in the WAC dual-meet standings.

"They get bragging rights over us for another year," Hawk Adrian Vizcaino said.

Down 29-27, Ceres High won the final three matches to secure the victory.

Alex Zuniga pinned Casandra Maldonado in the first round (0:55) during their 115-pound meeting.

Balderas pinned Michael Manzur in the third round (5:47) at 122 pounds.

Bruno de la Torre edged Angel Gonzales by decision (5-4) at 128 pounds.

Bulldog teammates Nick Santibanez, David Cisneros, Armando Morales, Tyree Williams and Ruben Sanchez also picked up wins.

Santibanez pinned Logan Dowling in the first round (1:50) at 134 pounds.

Cisneros pinned Frankie Valdez in the third round (5:47) at 147 pounds.

Morales pinned Gabe Ibarra in the first round (0:48) at 285 pounds.

Williams won by decision (12-5) over Joaquin Garcia at 172 pounds.

Sanchez won by forfeit at 222 pounds.

Vizcaino, Cristian Garcia, Eddy Nunez, Jorge Canales, Jose Castillo and Isaiah Gonzales accounted for Central Valley's six victories.

Vizcaino pinned Abel Morales in the first round (1:46) at 184 pounds.

Garcia pinned Gabe Solis in the second round (3:29) at 140 pounds.

Nunez pinned Felix Hercules in the third round (5:59) at 162 pounds.

Canales won by decision (16-9) over Matt Lopes at 197 pounds.

Castillo won by decision (9-7) over Austin Moore at 154 pounds.

Gonzales' technical-fall win (15-0) over Micah Young at 108 pounds gave the Hawks a 29-27 lead.

Zuniga, Balderas and de la Torre helped Ceres High notch its second straight victory versus Central Valley.

The Bulldogs erased a 22-point deficit and beat the Hawks 38-28 in 2012.

"It's pretty frustrating," Vizcaino said. "We were so close to winning."

Added Balderas: "We knew going into it, it could go either way."
