Sentencing panel is no answer

Prison reform and healthcare for prisoners have been a focus in the Legislature for the past two years. This year the Legislature passed Assembly Bill 900 (Solorio) in an attempt to address some of the prison reform needs. I agree that we need to expand our existing facilities or build new facilities to create additional bed space, but there are many components of this bill and other prison reform ideas that I cannot support.

Congress versus the price gougers

It's a dangerous world today. Remorseless men murder their wives and lovers. Terrorists want to bomb humankind back to the seventh century. And now, gas station owners with blood as cold as a reptile are conspiring to charge you outrageous sums for gasoline.

Governor should convene a budget revision panel

A "Budget Revision Panel" is indeed an interesting concept. I, for one, have been deeply frustrated with this year's budget process, or shall I say, lack of process. If the process had truly followed the design set forth in the California State Constitution, then it's feasible to believe that there would have been a state budget presented from the Legislature to the governor by the June 15 deadline. Thanks to a game of politics, rather than focusing on the people impacted by the budget, the budget was delayed for more than 52 days impacting vital state services.

Greg Laurie bore into hearts

It would have been real tough to miss the fact that Greg Laurie was in town. If the makeshift billboards, newspaper articles and bumper stickers didn't grab your attention, the message hanging from a vintage bi-plane flying over Ceres probably did.

CALWORKS reform makes sense

Lost in all the rhetoric and false accusations about the governor's proposal to reform CALWORKS (the state's welfare system) are the facts. While the liberal Democrat leadership of the Senate and Assembly try to portray this proposal conforming to federal law as somehow throwing single mothers and kids out into the streets, nothing could be farther from the truth.

OUR OPINION: Tax would help offset shortages in personnel

Ceres voters have an important decision to make on Nov. 6. Besides sending two members to the City Council, and selecting a mayor, voters will have to weigh increasing the sales tax a half percent to hire more police officers and firefighters.

Many adults are going AWOL

It's really too bad that we live in a society where we have to think about passing a law that cracks down on parties where alcohol is served to minors.
