The Stanislaus Regional Transit is taking steps to make local bus stop shelters more secure through the addition of solar lighting, a measure that is aimed at increasing safety for both those passengers waiting for a ride and drivers.

"The reason it's a great addition for StaRT is because we are the first of the four transit agencies in our area to implement solar lighting, so it's exciting to be at the forefront of emerging transit technology," explained Mobility Coordinator April Henderson-Potter. "Also, we get to increase safety and security for our customers who are using our services all throughout Stanislaus County."

With over 167 bus stops, StaRT provides transit services to towns as well as unincorporated communities within the county. The solar lighting was installed at 32 bus shelters in communities such as Ceres, Modesto, Riverbank, Oakdale, Patterson, Waterford, Westley, Grayson, as well as Turlock.

The solar upgrades are just one part of the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors' transit capital improvements projects and were made possible through Proposition 1B Transit Security Program Funds. These were awarded to the County's Public Works Transit Division by the Governor's Office of Emergency Services and used in conjunction with the Transportation Development Act to furnish the bus stops.
