The Ceres Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its former sergeants, Fred Perez. He died suddenly on Feb. 5 at the age of 72.

On Thursday afternoon the department raised and lowered the American flag above the Police Building in honor of Perez. The flag will be draped over his casket and presented to his widow at the graveside service, which is set for 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15 at at Ceres Memorial Park, 1801 E. Whitmore Avenue.

Visitation will be held today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel, 419 Scenic Drive in Modesto. A Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. at the chapel.

A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Jude's Catholic Church, 3824 Mitchell Road, Ceres.

The services are open to all who knew Sgt. Perez and would like to pay their respects to Lupe and the Perez family.

Perez served in the Army and became a Ceres Police officer in 1977 and worked his way up to sergeant before retiring in 2002. Sgt. Perez was a mentor to many officers he worked with but was best known as a great family man who spent countless hours with his family off duty. In his later years, he enjoyed dropping by the department to catch up with fellow co-workers.
