Men stabbed outside of Fourth Street bar

POSTED April 3, 2013 8:51 a.m.

Two Turlock men were stabbed in a fight outside of a Fourth Street bar early Sunday.

Police learned about the stabbing after medical personnel at Emanuel Medical Center called them at 1:12 a.m. to report that two victims of a stabbing turned up and were headed to surgery. A Ceres officer interviewed the victims at the hospital and learned that the fight occurred outside of Sweet Lu's Saloon at 3014 Fourth Street in downtown Ceres.

Ceres Police Lt. Brent Smith said a 22-year-old Turlock man had sustained eight stab wounds in the chest and abdomen and suffered from a punctured lung. A 23-year-old Turlock man suffered from two stab wounds.

Smith said the wounds were serious but not life threatening.

The men apparently got involved in a dispute inside the bar and got into a fight outside where the stabbing took place.

Police were unable to determine where the blood was spilled because heavy rains washed away the evidence, said Lt. Smith.

Ceres Police detectives are following up on the case and urge anyone with information on the case to give them a call at 538-5727.

Other notable crimes are chronicled as follows:

• CALL ENDS IN ARREST OF DRUNKEN DRIVER SUSPECT: CERES - A Madera man was arrested early Sunday for drunken driving charges after an alert motorist called 911 to report his erratic driving.

The citizen called 911 at 2:42 a.m. to say he was following the suspect who was driving a 1996 Toyota Camry northbound on Richland Avenue from Hatch Road. An officer made contact with the driver, Gonzalo Santiago, 30, of Madera, during a traffic stop in the 1500 block of Central Avenue. Santiago left the car running as he was babbling something about his family. The officer reached in the car to turn off the ignition, and had to be physically removed from the vehicle.

After registering a blood alcohol content of 0.21, Santiago was booked on charges of DUI.

• SUSPECT GOES NAKED AGAIN: CERES - Ceres police arrested a 24-year-old Ceres man for crimes committed while nude for a second time in less than a month.

On Saturday evening a resident of the 1600 block of Running Lane observed a nude man breaking into a home through a kitchen window. The person called the owner, who was not home at the time, who in turn called police at 11:07 p.m.

When police arrived they found a nude Donovan Saldana laying on a bed inside the home. After a brief struggle, Saldana was handcuffed and placed in the back of a patrol vehicle where he began to strike his head against the car.
Police arrested Saldana on charges of trespassing.
Lt. Brent Smith said the occupants of the home knew Saldana and had an order from the court for Saldana to stay away from the home.

Saldana was arrested March 4 on the same block after he removed his clothing in the street during what police belief was a hallucinogenic state following drug use. In that case, Saldana, a parolee, was arrested and booked for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

• WOMAN PASSES OUT WHILE DRIVING: CERES - Debra Van Houten, 56, of Modesto, was arrested for drunken driving early Saturday morning after she was found passed out behind the wheel in the left turn lanes of eastbound Hatch Road onto northbound Mitchell Road. Van Houten was found at 2:05 a.m. slumped behind the steering wheel of a 1995 BMW 540I, roused and arrested for DUI.
