An Oct. 28 pursuit of a driver resulted in police arresting Michael Wayne Smith, 58, of Keyes, who was driving on a suspended driver's license for failure to appear in 2011. Smith also had two felony warrants for his arrest.

At 11:54 p.m. Officer Vince Hooper was on duty near Mitchell and Hatch roads when he saw a Lincoln sedan driving northbound with headlights off. Officer Hooper took off after him westbound on Hatch Road. After turning onto Hatch Road, Smith turned on his headlights but sped up to 50 mph in a 25 mph zone as he turned onto southbound Moffett Road. Hooper activated his lights and siren in an attempt to pull over the driver but the vehicle sped up to 70 to 80 mph.

The driver ran the stop sign at Fowler and Garrison, slowed to 50 mph on Whitmore Avenue but then went through a red light onto southbound Ninth Street. The car sped up to over 70 mph and blew through stops signs at Magnolia, Lawrence, Roeding and El Camino. The suspect ran off the road and collided with the chain-link fence that separates El Camino Avenue and Highway 99. Smith bolted from the car, running across all lanes of the freeway and continuing to run southbound on Moffett Road where other police units found him hiding near the Don Pedro and Moffett roads.

Smith was booked into the Public Safety Center for evading police, hit and run, driving on a suspended license, and the warrants.
