A 21-year-old Modesto man was arrested Sunday morning after he was tracked down by residents who were victims of auto burglary he allegedly committed.

A resident at 2437 Thomas Avenue called police at 7:12 a.m. after seeing a man tampering with a vehicle and fleeing on a bicycle after he was called out. The caller said the suspect had several backpacks and dropped one of them as he fled. Officers examined the backpack and determined it had just been stolen out of a car parked in the driveway at 1909 Glenwood Avenue.

The caller said he has had his car broken into several times and that he and other neighbors started checking the neighborhood. They located the suspect Nicholas Ramos, 21, of Modesto, on Seventh Street and Thomas Avenue. Ramos began jumping fences to get away but officers located him walking near George's Liquor over an hour later.

Ramos said he was sleeping in a car because it was cold and the owner started chasing him. Ramos was found wearing a shirt from one of the victims. Several stolen items were recovered and identified by nearby victims who had their vehicles broken into.

Ramos had been arrested for auto burglaries in the past and is on probation. Ramos was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center for auto burglary, petty theft, and possession of stolen property.
