A 28-year-old Ceres man was arrested for theft at Fashion Tune, 1420 Hatch Road, on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 30, and allegedly trying to run over the shop owner who tried to retrieve his goods.

The robbery occurred at 1:26 p.m.

The store owner reported that he was knocked down by two men during the theft of clothing. He said he his hand was bleeding and said the driver tried to run him down as he sped off.

Ceres Police Sgt. Trenton Johnson spotted the suspects' car traveling southbound on Richland Avenue and initiated a high-risk vehicle stop as he waited for backup. Two males and two females exited the car. The victim positively identified Ajay Pal Singh, 28, of Ceres, as the thief and driver who tried running him over when fleeing.

Singh originally gave police his brother's name before they found out his true identity. Singh finally admitted the theft and hitting the shop owner with his vehicle while fleeing the scene.

Inside the car, officers found a black bag with several pairs of pants affixed with store security sensors and Fashion Tune tags. The stolen property was returned to the store.

The second man in the car, Danny Estes, 35, of Garberville, was arrested and booked on an active warrant issued by the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department for drug possession.

The two women were released after police determined they were not involved in the robbery. Singh was charged with felony robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, providing false identity and probation violation.
