Sophomore Isaiah Alcorn and Ceres High’s varsity baseball team topped Orestimba 12-4 at the Art McRae Tournament on April 3. Alcorn had four strikeouts in five innings.

Ceres High's varsity baseball team pounded 32 hits and scored 46 runs while finishing in first place at the Art McRae Tournament last week.

"I thought we played well in all areas," head coach Clinton Goblirsch said. "Our goal was to build momentum going into the last couple weeks of league."

The Bulldogs won all four of their games and evened their overall record at 8-8.

"We were patient at the plate but aggressive when we needed to be," Goblirsch said. "We (our pitchers) were able to go deep into games. They kept their pitch counts down and challenged hitters. They had confidence in the guys that were playing defense behind them."

Michael Aveytia's two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled Ceres High past Modesto Christian, 10-9, on Wednesday.

"It was an exciting way to finish the tournament," Goblirsch said.

Aveytia batted 3-for-5 from the plate with four RBIs and two runs versus the Crusaders.

"He had some clutch hits for us throughout the game," Goblirsch said.

The two teams combined for 25 hits, including 10 by the Bulldogs.

Josh Pernetti batted 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBIs and two runs.

Austin Schmidt batted 3-for-4 with one triple and three runs.

Adrian Magdaleno batted 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Brock DeWitt batted 1-for-4 with one run.

Caleb Cannella collected one RBI.

Daniel Gamez and Vince Guerrero both scored once.

The Bulldogs and Crusaders both overcame deficits.

Ceres High squandered leads of 3-0 and 8-6.

Modesto Christian blew leads of 5-3 and 9-8.

"I was proud of the way the guys battled back a couple times," Goblirsch said.

Down 9-8, Aveytia plated Gamez and Schmidt to win the contest.

Pernetti was the winning pitcher.

He surrendered one run in one inning.

Cesar Alvarez, Ceres High's starter, yielded seven earned runs and 13 hits with three strikeouts and two walks in five innings.

Brock Moore gave up one earned run and one hit with no strikeouts and one walk while tossing one inning of relief.

Ceres High held on for a 6-5 win over Waterford on Wednesday.

The Wildcats made the contest interesting by tallying three runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Bulldog starting pitcher Magdaleno totaled nine strikeouts and just one walk in 61/3 innings.

He allowed two runs and scattered 10 hits.

Adrian helped his own cause on offense by batting 2-for-3 with one double and one run.

DeWitt batted 3-for-3 with one RBI, one run and two stolen bases.

Aveytia batted 1-for-1 with one RBI and one run.

Cannella batted 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Schmidt collected one RBI.

Alvarez and Moore both scored one run.

Canella gave up no runs and two hit with 12 strikeouts and six walks in Ceres High's 18-0, five-inning rout of Johansen on April 3.

Caleb singled and knocked in one run on offense.

The Bulldogs totaled 10 hits.

Magdaleno batted 1-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs.

Guerrero batted 2-for-4 with one double, two RBIs and one run.

Efrain Brito batted 1-for-2 with two RBIs and one run.

Schmidt batted 1-or-1 with one double, one RBI and two runs.

Alvarez batted 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run.

Pernetti batted 1-for-2 with one RBI and two runs.

Aveytia batted 1-for-3 with two runs.

DeWitt and Moore both scored twice.

Xavier Mendoza had one RBI.

Gamez and McCue chipped in with one run apiece.

Ceres High snapped a three-game losing streak with a 12-4 win over Orestimba on April 3.

The Bulldogs scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Aveytia batted 2-for-4 with one double, three RBIs and two runs.

Alvarez batted 1-for-1 with two RBIs and two runs.

Brito batted 1-for-2 with one double, two RBIs and one run.

DeWitt batted 1-for-3 with one RBI and two runs.

Schmidt collected one RBI and two runs.

Alcorn collected two runs and three walks.

Pernetti collected one RBI and two walks.

Moore scored once.

Alcorn started at pitcher.

Isaiah had four strikeouts and six walks in five innings.

He gave up three earned runs and seven hits.

Ceres High will face Western Athletic Conference-rival Patterson twice this week.

The Bulldogs will play host to the Tigers tomorrow at 4 p.m.

"We expect to play well every time we're on the field," Goblirsch said. "That's always our goal."
