Central Valley varsity boys tennis players Juan Zaragoza and Rogelio Perez gained valuable experience while playing in the Western Athletic Conference Singles Tournament on April 24 in Los Banos.

The two juniors were beaten in the opening round.

Zaragoza lost 6-2, 6-3 to Los Banos' Jared Haug in the opening round.

"The first set was competitive," head coach Mike Rodriguez said. "Juan had a chance to go up 3-0. It was 30-love. He lost the momentum."

Zaragoza compiled a 3-8 record against WAC competition in 2018.

He started at No. 1 singles during the regular season.

"He's gotten better each year," Rodriguez said. "He'll definitely be more competitive next season. When Juan's consistent, he can play with anybody. He's got to learn to be a lot more patient hitting the ball and setting up his shots."

Perez lost 6-0, 6-0 to Patterson's Lolyn Tejeda.

Lolyn also beat Rogelio during the regular season.

"He played against a kid who hits everything back," Rodriguez said. "He's a tough matchup for everybody. The match was competitive. Lolyn was able to win the big points."

Perez posted a 1-3 record in WAC play.

Rogelio was a late addition to the team.

"It's tough to sit out most of the year and then come out and play," Rodriguez said. "Rogelio hits the ball with decent pace. He's got to learn how to come forward to the net, volley more and be aggressive."
