Central Valley's varsity boys basketball team captured the consolation championship at the Lincoln Tournament this past week in Stockton.

The Hawks won back-to-back games after losing their opener.

"I knew it was going to be a tough tournament," head coach Mike Rodriguez said. "I thought the kids played very well. They got better."

Max Sanchez earned all-tourney honors.

The senior guard averaged 19 points per game.

He made 13 3-pointers.

"Credit to Max," Rodriguez said. "He's stepping up and making threes."

Sanchez buried five treys on his way to pouring in a game-high 25 points during Central Valley's 62-54 win over Tokay for fifth place on Saturday.

Daniel Villasenor, David Serrano, Munraj Singh and Miguel Jimenez added 14, 10, nine and four points, respectively.

Central Valley pulled away for a 62-39 victory over Hiram Johnson on Friday.

"We executed down the stretch," Rodriguez said. "We could have won by more. We let them hang around."

Sanchez paced the Hawks with 14 points.

He drained four 3-pointers.
Grant Neang scored 12 points.

Villasenor tallied 10 points.
Serrano, Jimenez and Singh chipped in with nine, seven and two points, respectively.
Hanson Hy contributed eight points.

Central Valley dropped its opening game, 68-60, in overtime to perennial playoff-qualifier Sierra.

"We played a good three quarters against a quality team," Rodriguez said. "We couldn't close it out. We had a 15-point lead going into the fourth quarter. We gave it away."

The Wolves accounted for 33 of the contest's final 42 points.

"We stopped attacking and let them back into the game," Rodriguez said.

Sanchez led Central Valley in scoring with 18 points.

He drilled four 3-pointers.
Villasenor, Serrano and Singh totaled 14, 11 and nine points, respectively.

Neang and Phil Jackson each had two points.

Central Valley improved its overall record to 5-8.

The Hawks will play in the St. Francis Holiday Classic, Dec. 28-30, in Mountain View.

"Our kids are playing hard," Rodriguez said. "They're buying into what we're trying to do as far as pressing and trapping on defense."

BOYS SOCCER
Central Valley's varsity boys soccer team closed out the preseason with a 4-1 loss at Turlock on Dec. 13.

The final score didn't reflect the competitiveness of the game.

The Hawks trailed 1-0 at intermission.

"We lost our composure the last 15-20 minutes," Central Valley head coach Omar Leon said. "We started committing unnecessary fouls."

The Bulldogs (9-3-2) took control with a three-goal barrage in a 10-minute span during the second half.

"It was competitive up to that point," Leon said.

Junior Roberto Pelayo notched the Hawks' lone goal.

Central Valley sophomore goalkeeper Mauricio Perez made six saves.

The Hawks posted a 6-3-3 record against non-conference opponents.

Central Valley placed second at the Buchanan Tournament and third at the East Union Tournament.

Junior Gerardo Flores totaled eight goals and three assists in 12 games.

Sophomore Isaac Juarez and freshman Agustin Gutierrez contributed four goals and two assists apiece.

"With the exception of Turlock and Merced, I'm very happy with how we played," Leon said. "We had a positive preseason. It's the most competitive preseason schedule we've had. We played first-caliber teams."
