Dawgs place 7th at Mike Tamana wrestling tourney

Ceres High senior Jaden Cooper won all three of his matches en route to claiming the 145-pound championship at the Mike Tamana Tournament on Friday at Modesto Junior College.

Jaden Cooper, a 145-pound standout with Ceres High's varsity boys wrestling program, breezed to a first-place finish at the Mike Tamana Tournament last Friday at Modesto Junior College.

Ethan Letras, Sonald Lal, Austin Hanshew, Shanald Lal, Andrew Gibson, Edison Jimenez and David Caravalho also placed as the Bulldogs posted a team score of 78 while taking seventh in the team standings.

"We enjoyed going to a local tournament and showcasing our talent," Ceres High head coach Steve Festa said. "We were effective on the mat. There's still room to get better."

Disappointed with his third-place showing at the Ceres Invitational, Jaden won all three of his matches by pin at Modesto JC.

Cooper beat El Camino's Jose Barnabe, Redwood's Jarron Sullivan and Esclaon's Rhys Panero.

"I was really motivated because I lost at our home tournament," Cooper said. "I wanted to redeem myself. I always believe I can win."

"I'm proud of Jaden," Festa added. "That's the first championship belt we've earned from a major tournament. It's a really special."

Letras placed second in the 160-pound weight class.

He won two of three matches.

Ethan beat Summerville's Austin Luckett (pin) and Escalon's David Ryan (decision).

He lost to Bret Harte's Kodiak Stephens (pin).

Sonald Lal placed fifth at 106 pounds.

He lost to Escalon's Braiden Vega (pin) and Sonora's Clayton Franco (decision).

Hanshew placed fifth at 195 pounds.

Austin beat Livingston's Isaac Peralta (pin).

He lost to Escalon's Stephen Mendez (decision) and Washington Union's Alfredo Morales (decision).

Shanald Lal placed sixth at 113 pounds.

Shanald beat Delhi's Sabastian Romero (pin).

He lost to Livingston's Mathew Cisneros (pin), Atwater's Malachi Jensen (decision) and Redwood's Colby Castillo (decision).

Gibson placed sixth at 182 pounds.

Andrew beat Washington Union's Mathew Rodriguez (decision).

He lost to Rodriguez (pin), Redwood's Daiel Alcala (decision) and Escalon's Luke Anderson (pin).

Jimenez placed eighth at 138 pounds.

He beat El Capitan's Javier Perez (pin).

Edison lost to Patterson's Alex Sanchez (decision) and Redwood's Alex Rodriguez (pin).

Caravalho placed eighth at 182 pounds.

He lost to Escalon's Donnie Smith (major decision) and Los Banos' Cyrus Hughes (decision).

Bulldog teammates Ricky Gonzalez (126s), Marcus Martinez Jr. (126 pounds), Brian Ayala (132s) and Allen Thy (170s) did not place.

Gonzalez beat Livingston's Juan Martinez (decision).

He lost to Los Banos' Sebastian Vergara (pin) and Escalon's Aliden Kriegar (pin).

Martinez Jr. lost to Livingston's Dennis Brusenski (decision) and Sonora's Trevor Davis (major decision).

Ayala lost to Washington Union's Jacob Licea (technical fall) and Escalon's Garrett Nash (pin).

Thy lost to Fra's Samandeep Bal (decision) and Escalon's Julian Guitterez (pin).

Ceres High's Daniel McElwain (sick) and Spencer Nelson (finals) were sidelined for different reasons.
