Ceres High's freshman girls basketball team erased an eight-point deficit en route to posting a 35-34 road win over crosstown-rival Central Valley.

Catryna Marquez's three-point play-layup and free throw-with 27 seconds left in regulation lifted the Bulldogs to a dramatic comeback victory against the Hawks in Western Athletic Conference action on Jan. 23.

"I was scared and excited," Marquez said when asked how she was feeling prior to making the go-ahead foul shot. "We didn't want to go into overtime."

Marquez totaled a game-high 22 points for the second-place Bulldogs (4-2).

Tatiana De Los Reyes had six points.

Bethanie Thornberry totaled three points.

Dajanae Desmond and Jada Renderos both added two points.

"I like when my team can depend on me," Catryna said.

Jordynn Cushenberry led the fourth-place Hawks (1-5) with 14 points.

Bandna Bhatti and Willow Vanderheiden tallied nine and seven points, respectively.

Leslie Alonso and Janae Correa both contributed two points.

Ceres High faced a 28-21 deficit at the end of the third quarter.

The Bulldogs outscored the Hawks 14-6 in the final period. Marquez had 11 points.

"I knew we'd be able to come back because we work really well together under pressure," Catryna said.

Central Valley missed two potential, game-winning shots from under its basket in the waning seconds.

"After the free throw, all I was focused on was not letting them score," Marquez said. "It means a lot to win because they're our crosstown rival. This is our biggest game."
