The Ceres Sizzle 8-and-under travel softball team played in its second kid-pitch tournament of the summer this past weekend in Elk Grove.

The Sizzle compiled a 4-1 record en route to capturing the Summer Smash title at the Bartholomew Sports Complex.

"It's a big difference for the girls having to look at pitches from players instead of coaches," Ceres team manager Dima Ferrel said. "Strikes and balls are called on them. All of our girls hit well. We're so proud of them."

Ceres defeated the NorCal Rebels 9-2 for the championship on Sunday.

"Every single girl got on base," head coach Nikole Ferrel said.

Noni Sagapolu hit a three-run homer in the third inning.

Sizzle pitcher Kylie Bond tallied six strikeouts, including three in the second inning.

Kenzo Kemplin doubled and knocked in two runs.

Kyleigh Robinson batted 2-for-2 with one double, one single and one RBI.

Ceres posted a 7-1 win over the Elk Grove Bandits in the semifinals on Sunday.

The Sizzle won two of three games on Saturday.

Ceres beat the Bandits (7-3) and Rebels (5-3).

The Sizzle lost to the Rebels (12-10).

Noni, the younger sister of Ceres High softball standout Rayohna Sagapolu, belted four homers at the tournament.

Lilian Camarena started at catcher during both games on Sunday.

Ceres placed first at the June 25-26 Newman and June 18-19 Riverbank tournaments.

The Sizzle took second at the June 4-5 Kickoff To Summer tourney in Elk Grove.

Ceres will compete in Vacaville, July 23-24.

"I'm not surprised," Nikole Ferrel said while talking about her team's success. "We got a good group of girls. They've improved so much. They love the game. They want to learn. They get along really well. They enjoy each other."
