Andre Flores continued his superiority in the ring earlier this month in Compton.

The La Rosa Elementary School fifth-grader placed first at the USA Boxing Silver Gloves Western Regional-8 Championships for the second year in a row.

"I'm relieved I'm going to Nationals again," said Flores, 10.

"He was so focused on trying to get to Nationals, he stopped thinking about his fundamentals," said Damian Flores, Andre's father, strength and conditioning coach, and nutritionist. "For the most part, he did decent. There's some stuff we need to work on."

Andre placed first in the 9-10-year-old 75-pound division.

He captured the 65-pound title in the same age group last year.

"I was able to win again," Andre said. "It's very meaningful."

Flores earned unanimous-decision victories against Arizona's Ronaldo Plata and Colorado's Gabriel Inzunza.

Andre topped Ronaldo in the finals.

"Andre was the aggressor," Damian said. "He was throwing cleaner shots and harder punches. He controlled the ring."

"He put up a good fight," Andre said. "I'd throw my jab and he's jump to the side and hit me. The adjustment I made messed him up bad. I started feinting and catching him with my right hand."

Flores trained at Floyd Mayweather's gym in Las Vegas prior to competing at Regionals.
"He worked with three national champs," Damian said. "He got top-quality sparring out there."

"It helped a lot," Andre said. "They hit a lot harder than the kids in my weight bracket and know a lot more stuff."

Andre improved his overall record to 27-4.

Flores won national, regional and state titles last year.

"His work ethic is off the charts," Damian said. "He never makes excuses or complains about anything."

The 2018 National Silver Gloves Tournament is being staged this week in Missouri.

"If I didn't win it again, I'd be super devastated," Andre said. "It's going to take a lot of hard work. I got to tighten up my guard and square up when I come in."

"The goal is to not leave it in the judges' hands," Damian said. "We want to be decisive in our wins."
