Just a freshman, Callie Nunes performed like a seasoned veteran while leading the Concordia University softball team to the 2017 PacWest Conference crown this spring.

The Ceres High grad earned PacWest Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors on May 8.

She was also selected to the PacWest First Team.

"Personally, I wasn't expecting all of this," said Nunes, a 5-foot-5, 117-pound hurler. "It's awesome being recognized for all of my accomplishments. But I don't pitch to get awards. My goal is to help my team win."

Nunes ranked second in NCAA Division II with an ERA of 0.74 and third with 291 strikeouts as of Monday.

She posted a 25-4 record with 18 complete games and two no-hitters.

Callie collected a school-record eight saves.

"She dominated," said Angela Durossette, Nunes' coach at Ceres High. "I'm not surprised at all by her numbers. She's put in a lot of work over the years. She wants to be great. That's her goal."

The Eagles went 46-14 on the year and 26-6 against PacWest competition.

Concordia University won 24 of its last 25 games during the regular season.

The Eagles reeled off 14 straight victories.

The Eagles moved from fifth to first in the PacWest standings thanks to their run of dominance.

"I'm pretty happy with what I did," Nunes said. "The thing I'm most proud of is the team winning our conference outright. We surprised people."
