Bulldogs, Hawks have challenging slate of games

Jesus Medina (56) and Central Valley will play against six teams that advanced to the playoffs in 2012 this year.

POSTED August 29, 2013 10:39 a.m.

A schedule full of accomplished opponents awaits Ceres High's and Central Valley's varsity football teams.

"It will be good competition," Bulldogs head coach Bret Durossette said. "We'll see where we stand."

"Expectations are very high for us," Hawks leader Jason McCloskey stated. "We're looking forward to the challenge. We got to play sound, fundamental football. We can't win on just talent alone."

Five of Ceres High's 10 games are against 2012 playoff participants Downey, Central Catholic, Patterson, Pacheco and Los Banos.

The Bulldogs will face Modesto High (1-9, 0-6 Modesto Metro Conference), Gregori (3-7, 3-3 MMC), Downey (10-2, 6-0 MMC, Division-I playoff qualifier) and Johansen (1-9, 1-5 MMC) during the preseason.

As members of the Western Athletic Conference, Ceres High will battle Los Banos (11-2, 5-1, Division-IV playoff participant), Livingston (4-6, 1-5), Patterson (7-4, 4-2, Division-III playoffs), Pacheco (5-6, 3-3, Division-III playoffs), Central Catholic (14-2, 6-0, CIF Division-IV state and section champs) and Central Valley (5-5, 2-4).

Ceres High collected wins against Gregori (27-26) and Johansen (45-32) last year.

The Bulldogs lost to Modesto High (31-7), Downey (74-0), Pacheco (41-20), Central Catholic (69-7), Los Banos (45-0), Livingston (42-28), Patterson (54-21) and Central Valley (40-13).

"We'll be a lot better this year from an athletic standpoint," said Durossette, whose team compiled a 2-8 overall record and finished in last place in the WAC (0-6) in 2012. "We're young. We could make the playoffs if the kids stay healthy. They've been committed this summer. They have a great connection."
The Hawks will play Manteca (6-5, 5-2 Valley Oak League, Division-III playoffs), Brookside Christian (10-2, 5-0 Central California AA Football Standings, Division-IV section champs), Johansen, Madera South (0-10, 0-5 Country Metro League), Pacheco, Patterson, Livingston, Central Catholic, Los Banos and Ceres High.

Central Valley topped Gregori (27-16), Johansen (27-0), Madera South (35-20), Livingston (42-7) and Ceres High (40-13) in 2012.

The Hawks lost to Golden Valley (28-24), Patterson (21-20), Pacheco (30-20), Los Banos (29-0) and Central Catholic (38-6).

Six of the Central Valley's 2013 opponents advanced to the postseason a year ago, including Manteca, Brookside Christian, Pacheco, Patterson, Central Catholic and Los Banos.

"We're trying to get to the playoffs," McCloskey said. "You have to play teams that have been there and beat them. There are some really good teams in the WAC. I think it's underrated. It's only going to make us better in the long run."

Central Valley fell one win shy of making the Division-III playoffs last season.

The Hawks dropped four of their final five games, including a pair of contests by a combined five points.
