An auto parts storage building located across from a fire station went up in flames Tuesday night in Hughson.

The fire was located inside a building at 7001 Hughson Ave., that is used by the Napa Auto Parts store for storage. The fire broke out shortly after 6 p.m. and was first noticed by a citizen in the area.

The citizen ran to a Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department sub-station just to the north of the building to notify them of the fire. The Hughson Fire Department station is directly across the street from the storage building, but it is unknown if it is continually manned.

The citizen told a sheriff's deputy there was smoke coming from the building and the sounds of explosions could be heard coming from inside, according to sheriff's Lt. Mario Cisneros. When the deputy arrived the building was fully engulfed in flames, Cisneros said.

Firefighters checked and found no one inside the building. There were no reported injuries, Cisneros said.

The fire was contained within a short time, though crews from Hughson, Ceres, and Stanislaus Consolidated stayed on scene for a few hours to put out any hot spots.

The flames caused considerable damage to the storage building, but fire crews were able to keep the flames from spreading to the building next door, which houses City of Hughson offices.

The cause of the fire is unknown. A fire investigator was on scene.

The building was used to store extra auto parts, some personal property, and combustible liquids such as paint thinner, Cisneros said. Two vehicles, including a limousine were in the building when the fire erupted. The limousine, which is for sale, was rolled out scorched and charred by the flames.
