A Celebration of Life was held Saturday at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel for Alfred John Bettencourt, 88, of Modesto. He died June 6, 2011 in Modesto.

Born Dec. 18, 1932 in Modesto, Al attended Ceres High School. After enlisting and serving in the Navy as a lieutenant during World War II, he returned to Modesto where he continued his education and met Wallie, his wife of 64 years. His career as a mortgage broker took them to various parts of California, including Stockton where at age 40 he became an avid water skier. He enjoyed teaching others to ski and became known for how patient he was with beginners.

He leaves behind his wife, Wallie Bettencourt of Modesto; his daughter, Pam Robinson; his sister, Pat Julian; and his granddaughter, Christy Mantz.
