The Ceres High softball team stayed in the hunt for the Central California Conference title on Thursday in Ceres.
Senior pitcher Andrea Mathis allowed four hits and had three strikeouts and no walks in five innings and junior infielder Heidi Eisenbeis belted a solo homer, doubled and scored two runs as the Bulldogs beat Beyer 10-0 and improved to 12-3 in the CCC standings, 18-6 overall. The Patriots fell to 3-12 league.
Ceres is trying to win its eighth straight CCC title.
First-place Turlock (13-2) has a one-game lead over Ceres, Turlock and Golden Valley.
"Until we lose, we're still the champions of the CCC," said Ceres coach Mike Corsaut.
Ceres concludes the regular season this week. The Bulldogs play host to Davis on Thursday and at Turlock on Friday. Both games start at 3:30 p.m.
"They've got to beat us to take it (the league championship)," Corsaut said. "We're not going to give it away. "I have confidence in my team."
Ceres scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, two in the third, four in the fourth and one in the fifth.
"The girls hit the ball hard today," Corsaut said. "They also played flawless defense."
Beyer pitcher Rochelle Joseph never recovered after Eisenbeis led off the game with a home run to center field.
No other player had ever hit a homer over the fence at Ceres stadium during a game. "That just jacked up everybody," Corsaut said. "There were three doubles after the home run." - By DALE BUTLER / Staff Reporter of The Ceres (Calif.) Courier
