The Ceres High baseball team held its annual awards banquet in the school's cafeteria on Monday, May 24. Spaghetti was served and players were praised during the 90-minute gathering.

"The kids didn't give up," said Ceres coach Tim Williams. "They continued to work hard all season. They showed a lot of character."

Three players received special recognition: Cole Stanhope, Brian Borges and Mike Arnold.

Stanhope won the Most Valuable Player Award. The senior was one of the best catchers in the Central California Conference.

"His defense behind the plate was awesome," Williams said.

Borges won the Top Offensive Player Award. The junior center fielder/leadoff hitter had a .323 batting average.

"He was the only one to bat .300 on the team," Williams said.

Borges will be moved to the heart of the lineup next season.

"There's a good possibility he could be bumped down to No. 3, 4 or 5 so he can knock in some runs for us," Williams said.

Arnold won the Bulldog Award. The senior pitcher had a 4.80 earned run average.

Arnold pitched pretty well at times but a lack of offense and poor defense proved costly. The Bulldogs batted .213 from the plate with runners in scoring position.

"He deserved that award," Williams said. "He worked very hard during the season."

Players selected the Most Valuable and Top Offensive player award winners.

Coaches selected the award winner.

Ceres finished last in the CCC with a 1-17 record. The Bulldogs lost their final 20 games, including 16 straight in league.

"Hopefully, we'll be able to turn it around next year," Williams said. - By DALE BUTLER/ Sports Editor
