Earthquakes place first at Regionals

The Ceres Earthquakes boys competitive soccer club finished in first place in the U-18/19 Super Group of the 2010 National Cup IX Modesto Regional.

"These guys have played against the best teams in the country," head coach Jose Hernandez said. "They have a lot of experience."

The Earthquakes compiled a 3-0 record at the tournament, held June 12-14 at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex.

Ceres defeated California Rush 93 3-1 on June 14.

Alex Bettencourt, Misael Laureano and Octavio Murillo all had one goal apiece.

The Earthquakes edged North Cal Elite 2-1 on June 13.

Bettencourt and Larry Hernandez both scored once for Ceres.

The Earthquakes posted a 3-1 victory over the Juventus Strikers on June 12.

Antonio Cabrera, Francisco Chavez and Jose Ramirez contributed one goal each.

Ceres' roster consists of 18 players, including Ramirez, Hernandez, Cabrera, Chavez, Murillo, Laureano, Bettencourt, Gerardo Cazares, David Estrada, Ricardo Rios, Manuel Garcia, Ricky Madrigal, Rene Mejia, Bryan Burnham, Austin Schwalbach, Eduardo Lopez, Luis Garcia and Wilber Robles.

Ramirez, Hernandez, Cabrera and Cazares, and David Estrada and Ricardo Rios were rivals in high school.

Jose, Larry, Antonio and Gerardo starred at Central Valley last fall.

David and Ricardo played for Ceres High, which claimed the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championship.

The Earthquakes will compete in the Santa Clara Sporting Invitational, Aug. 6-8.

"It's the No. 1 tournament in Northern California," Jose Hernandez said.
