A Ceres man has been arrested and charged with shooting his mother in the head Thursday evening during a heated argument that started when he became upset playing video games in her home.

The 68-year-old woman died at a local hospital following the 9:48 p.m. shooting in River Valley Circle in Ceres.

Ceres Police Department spokesman Sgt. Greg Yotsuya said Matthew Nicholson, 28, of Ceres, was living with his parents and had been in his bedroom playing video games when he grew upset and started yelling. Nicholson's mother went to see what was wrong with her son and the two began to argue. Yotsuya said the suspect ended up breaking the headset to his video game but blamed his mother and threatened to kill her and Nicholson's father. Sgt. Yotsuya said Nicholson then fetched a handgun and fired two rounds into the wall inside the home and then shot his mother in the head.

Police said Nicholson's father wrestled the gun from Nicholson and that he drove off to a relative's home in Riverbank. Officers located the vehicle in Riverbank and arrested Nicholson in a high-risk vehicle stop. He was brought to the Ceres Police Department for questioning and was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail for homicide. He is being held without bail.

Sgt. Yotsuya said the crime is still being actively investigated and would release no further details about what led up to the shooting.
