A 29-year-old Ceres woman died from a single gunshot wound to the face Thursday evening and a man at the scene has been arrested for homicide.

The suspect, Daniel Garcia, 29, of Ceres, is believed to be the victim’s estranged husband or boyfriend.

Officers immediately administered CPR until Ceres Fire and paramedics arrived to take over life saving measures. The victim was transported to a local hospital where she died. The name of the woman was not released pending notification of next of kin.

The shooting occurred in the 3900 block of Suncrest Drive and was reported at 9:17 p.m. by a woman who reported that her husband’s friend had just shot a woman. Police received other information that the woman may have shot herself. Officers found the mortally wounded woman lying on the ground next to the driveway. Daniel Garcia, 29, of Ceres was kneeling over her.

Garcia was detained and questioned at Ceres Police Department headquarters before he was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center for homicide.

Investigators learned that the victim was not living at the home where the shooting took place but that Daniel Garcia was staying with friends at the home. Police are investigating the relationship between Garcia and the woman and said they have children together.

This investigation is still in the early stages.

Anyone who may have seen what occurred in front of the residence or may have any information regarding the case is urged to call Ceres Detective Matt Berlier at 538-5616.
