Deputies at burn victim site
Stanislaus County Sheriff's deputies check out the scene under the Hatch Road overpass at South Seventh Street where a homeless man sustained major burns on his body.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the circumstances of a homeless man being burned and suffering life-threatening injuries Monday morning.

At 9:30 a.m., deputies and medical personnel responded to 665 S 7th Street in south Modesto for the report of a man who had been burned on the front of his body. He was transported by medical helicopter to an out-of-county hospital.

The Sheriff’s Department’s Crimes against Persons Unit responded to the scene to begin investigating. Department spokesman Sgt. Luke Schwartz said it’s believed the man was sleeping under the Highway 99 overpass near Pecos Avenue when he was burned. He then walked to a family member’s residence where someone called 911 for help.

The circumstances surrounding this incident are still being determined.
