Olivero incident
Sheriff's Department SWAT team members surround an Olivero Road home Thursday afternoon where a man took a child hostage. The child was safely rescued while the suspect was shot and killed.

Sheriff’s Department SWAT team members rescued a child who was taken hostage after an armed man broke into a home in the 200 block of Olivero Road Thursday afternoon and moments later killed the suspect.

The dead man was identified as Jose Jesus Astorga Jr., 37, of Modesto. He had an extensive criminal history and was wanted on a no-bail felony warrant for auto theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, and resisting arrest.

Deputies responded to a 1:42 p.m. call about the home invasion where a man entered the home armed with a gun. When they arrived they learned that a 12-year-old girl, 14-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl were inside but two had escaped to safety. The minor left inside was held hostage but it was not clear which one.

The Sheriff’s Department SWAT and hostage negotiation teams were activated. Over several hours attempts were made unsuccessfully to get Astorga to surrender. The juvenile hostage attempted to escape but was prevented from leaving the home by the Astorga. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s SWAT Team was able to rescue the minor. During the rescue attempt Astorga was fatally shot. The child escaped physical harm.

Detectives along with investigators from the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office were sorting out details of the event and did not release any information about the incident.

Modesto Police also assisted in the Sheriff’s Department.

Anyone with information that would help with the investigation is urged to call Sheriff’s Detective Cory Brown at 567-4485. Anonymous tips may be left on the Crime Stoppers line at 521-4636.
