A Hughson man was arrested Sunday morning after he allegedly dined at Denny's in Ceres, left without paying and was located with drugs on him.

Police spotted Johnathon Richey, 21, after the business reported the crime at 1:53 a.m. Officers began chasing Richey down the alley between Joyce and Eugene avenues. He was tackled by officers but put up a fight which hurt one officer's shoulder. During the fight Richey was reaching for his pocket. He later said that he thought he had a hypodermic syringe in his pocket and that he was trying to get rid of it. Richey also told officers that he has a drug problem.

A search of Richey yielded a two-way radio which may have been reported stolen from Adkison Elementary School.

Richey was charged with possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, violation of probation and defrauding providers of food.

The injured officer is off until April 3.
