Driver booked for DUI after Caswell Avenue crash
Ceres Cop Car

Ceres resident Robert Ekkelboom II, 38, was arrested and booked for felony DUI causing injury and driving on a suspended license following a Friday evening crash in which others were injured.

The head-on crash took place at 7:29 p.m. in the eastbound lane of Caswell Avenue at Fifth Street.

Witnesses said a white 2012 Chevy Silverado crossed into the lane of a silver 2012 Mini Cooper. The passenger car sustained major front-end damage and a male and female passenger were taken to a local hospital for treatment of visible non-life threatening injuries.

Sgt. Travis Hudson detected signs that pickup driver Ekkelboom was intoxicated, noting his red watery eyes, slurred speech, and strong smell of alcohol on his breath. Ekkelboom admitted to drinking prior to driving.

Officer Kevin Sakasegawa put Ekkelboom through a series of field sobriety tests and determined he was under the influence of alcohol. A breath sample revealed a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) nearly two times over the legal limit.
