An attempt to stop a driver for a broken windshield led to its driver trying to evade an officer Sunday to give his passenger enough time to toss a backpack filled with drugs.

Officer Matt Berlier tried to stop the driver at 3:51 p.m. on Moffett Road but the car ducked into the gated community through Parklane. Berlier got the vehicle stopped and contacted the driver, who admitted they were attempting to get away. As the officer dealt with the stop, a passerby in another car advised Berlier that there was a backpack lying in a flowerbed nearby. Another officer came by and retrieved the backpack, which contained approximately four ounces of heroin and three ounces of methamphetamine. Police learned that passenger Luis Vargas, 24, of Los Angeles, tossed out the backpack. Vargas was arrested and booked on a multitude of charges.
