DUI driver arrested after hitting pole and fleeing

A 22-year-old Modesto man was cited and turned over to a sober relative after he allegedly crashed into a pole in the 2700 block of Third Street early Sunday and fled the scene.

At 12:20 a.m., Community Service Officer Dave McCann heard a crash and witnessed a red Nissan Titan leave the area while being driven recklessly.

Officer Scott Faure and other officers responded to a hit-and-run. In moments Sgt. Jose Berber detained driver Ivan Chavez, 22 in the 2900 block of Fifth Street. 

Chavez appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and or drugs. A DUI was conducted by Officer Faure and Chavez was arrested. He submitted to a breath test and was found to have one and a half times the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

It was discovered that Chavez had struck a power pole in the 2700 block of Third Street and fled the area.

He was cited for DUI and hit-and-run and released to a sober relative.
