A 25-year-old Newman man was cited and released to family after he was found driving drunk in Ceres early Sunday morning, June 28.

Sgt. Vince Hooper observed a white Honda traveling westbound on Whitmore Avenue approaching Eastgate Boulevard at 2:15 a.m. The driver did not slow down or stop for the flashing red signal light which is controlling the intersection due to road construction. The driver then drove on the wrong side of the divided roadway, traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Whitmore Avenue.

Sgt. Hooper stopped the vehicle on Whitmore Avenue and Mitchell Road. Driver Abelardo Medoza-Avila appeared to be intoxicated.

Officer Kevin Sakasegawa arrived to conduct a DUI investigation which determined that Medoza-Avila was over the legal limit to drive.

He was released on a citation for DUI to family members due to the current state mandated “zero bail” policy.
