A man who was caught Friday evening violating a city ordinance that prohibits dumpster diving was found with six outstanding arrest warrants.

At 11:02 p.m., Ceres Police Officer Eric Souza noticed two men in the enclosed trash area behind the AM/PM on Hatch Road and informed them that city law forbids rummaging through trash containers. He checked their identities against the criminal data base and learned that James Matthews, 56, of Modesto, had six warrants for such crimes as possession of drugs, theft and trespassing. He was arrested and found to be in possession of a glass methamphetamine smoking pipe and a small baggy containing suspected methamphetamine.

He was booked on charges of possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia and the warrants.
