Stanislaus County Probation officers who made a compliance check visit on a 45-year-old Ceres man Tuesday found that he had a homemade bomb and quickly evacuated the neighborhood.

The bomb was safely disposed of by the Sheriff’s Department bomb squad and the man responsible was booked into the county jail.

According to Ceres Police Lt. Jeff Godfrey, the home of Janmichael Valdez in the 3900 block of Blaker Road in Ceres was visited by officers at approximately 2:17 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29. They found the explosive device while searching the home since Valdez is on probation.

Ceres Police were called and helped to immediately evacuate nearby residents and close off surrounding streets. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad responded to the scene and conducted an assessment, determining that the device was a bomb. The device was removed from the residence by robot and transported to a secure location where it was rendered safe.

Valdez was charged with possession of an explosive device and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center.

The case is still under investigation.
