A vehicle that was involved in reckless driving and a terminated police pursuit on Christmas day was seized and impounded seven days later.

The owner of the Honda Accord will not be able to retrieve it for the month – if he pays some steep impound fees.

The driver of the car was seen by Ceres Police Officer Greg Houser running through two red lights in the area of Hatch and Herndon roads at approximately 2:05 a.m. on Dec. 25. The officer chased after the driver who instead of yielding, accelerated onto northbound Highway 99 at a high rate of speed. The vehicle exited the freeway into the downtown Modesto area and continued speeding while running multiple red traffic lights. Due to concerns for public safety, the pursuit was terminated.

Officer Houser later received court-ordered approval to seize the car pursuant to California Vehicle Code section 14602.7. The section states that when a peace officer determines that a vehicle was used to evade a vehicle code offense the officer can seek authorization to seize and impound the vehicle for up to 30 days.

The vehicle was towed at approximately 10:38 p.m. on New Year’s Day.
