A 28-year-old Ceres man faces battery charges after he allegedly tackled a 60-year-old man in his apartment complex and telling officers that he felt like fighting someone so tackled him.

The incident happened at 8:55 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16 in front of the Richland Gardens apartment complex at 1749 Richland Ave. Ceres Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jose Berber said that Christopher Smith, 28, of Ceres, tackled the older man who walked through the complex to open a gate for a friend on the street. Smith stood on the sidewalk and rushed the man, tackling him. Smith also allegedly punched the man in the face. He was pulled off by the man's friend, cornered and detained.

"It appeared to be random since they never met before," said Sgt. Berber.
