A Saturday evening crash, likely caused by a driver’s intoxication, left a male pedestrian dead on South Ninth Street just north of Hatch Road.

The crash was reported to the California Highway Patrol at approximately 9:12 p.m. Emergency personnel arrived on scene and located transient Darren Lester Mosley, 52, deceased and lying in the roadway.

As CHP officers arrived on scene, they noted a 2020 Mercedes sedan with front-end collision damage was parked just south of the victim. The driver began to leave, entering the southbound exit onto Highway 99 before an enforcement stop was made by officers. The driver, Jasneal Hayer, 22, of Modesto, was arrested for felony DUI, hit and run and vehicular manslaughter. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center.

Caltrans set up a detour at Pecos Avenue around the crash site as authorities conducted their investigation.
