Police say that an intoxicated driver named Yosymar Bonilla, 21, of Modesto, was arrested and booked on three charges after he drove recklessly into Ceres Sunday evening while racing another driver and later tried to run from police.

Bonilla now faces three felonies charges – evading police, reckless driving and driving under the influence.

At 11:30 p.m., Sgt. Danny Vierra was on patrol and heard a broadcast from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department which was attempting to disperse a crowd of persons near Whitmore Avenue and Vivian Road. Persons from the crowd were reportedly racing their vehicles which included some Universal Terrain Vehicles (UTVs). Sgt. Vierra then heard an update that several of the vehicles leaving the area were driving recklessly toward Ceres.

Vierra parked on Whitmore Avenue near Ustick Road and waited to see if anyone drove by. A bit later he spotted two Can Am UTVs speeding eastbound on Whitmore Avenue. Officers attempted to stop the UTVs by activating lights and sirens, but the drivers continued about recklessly eastbound on Whitmore. Officers gave chase after one of the vehicles throughout several Ceres streets until the driver drove into an orchard on Central Avenue in the county.

A perimeter was set up with air support from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department. Bonilla bailed from the vehicle and ran on foot. He was later found hiding in a tree and arrested. He appeared to be intoxicated.
