A Sunday evening police pursuit of a stolen car suspect which began in Turlock ended with a crash in rural Hughson and a homeowner opening fire on the suspect who slid underneath his car to hide from police.
The suspect, Dustin Jay Robinson, 26, of Keyes, was not shot but authorities did arrest him a short time later in Hughson. His female passenger managed to slip away as law enforcement set up a perimeter.
According to Turlock Police Department Public Information Officer Dominique Sanchez, the incident began at approximately 10 p.m. when an officer located a stolen Honda Civic in the area of N. Golden State Boulevard and Roberts Road. The officer attempted to pull over Robinson but he accelerated northbound on Golden State before turning eastbound on Taylor Road. The chase then followed Walnut Avenue for a time.
The chase ended about 10 minutes later when the Sheriff’s Department laid down a spike strip in the 6600 block of E. Hatch Road and deflated the Honda tires. The suspect lost control of the Honda and crashed into an orchard with both occupants running from the car.
Moments later in the darkness officers heard a man yelling and then four to six gunshots. They ran to the report of gunfire and learned that the homeowner had shot at the suspect. They determined that the suspect was not hit as there was no blood.
Robinson was apprehended at 12:25 a.m. Monday. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges that included auto theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless evading a peace officer, evading a police officer by driving in the opposite direction of traffic, misdemeanor hit and run, possession of burglary tools, obstructing an officer and running through multiple stop signs.
