Sheriff's Department investigating shooting in rural Ceres

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is currently involved in a police activity in the area of Bystrum Road and Highway 99 northbound off-ramp in unincorporated Ceres, and is asking the public to avoid the area for the next few hours.

The Sheriff's Department received emergency 911 calls at approximately 11:45 a.m., today of a vehicle being reportedly shot at by occupants of another vehicle.

"Our deputies quickly responded and located a crime scene," said Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Luke Schwartz. "We later learned a victim was transported by unknown means to a local area hospital."

The extent of the person’s injuries is not fully known at this time. The male victim is being cared for in the trauma unit.

"We are asking members of the public to avoid the area near the Highway 99 off-ramp while we continue to process the scene, interview relevant witnesses and recover evidence," Schwartz said.

Deputies are still actively pursuing leads in hopes of contacting those responsible. Suspect information is limited at this time.
