A 36-year-old man who allegedly tried to steal a pair of shoes from WSS shoe store Saturday morning ended up arrested for robbery.

Ceres Police Department spokesman Sgt. Greg Yotsuya said Sione Tuakalau, 36, of Modesto, actively fought with store employees at 11:50 p.m. after he slipped on the shoes and walked out the door without buying them.

Surveillance video showed Tuakalau lace up a new pair of shoes and tried to bypass the register and was blocked at the door by the store’s loss prevention officer. Tuakalau was holding a cane and dropped his shoulder to force his way out the front door; however the employee was larger than Tuakalau and was only able to get a few feet outside. When Tuakalau heard the manager say police were on their way, he walked inside, removed the shoes and put on his old shoes, left the store and got into a black Acura. Sgt. Vince Hooper stopped the Acura as it was pulling out.

Tuakalau was arrested and booked for robbery and probation violations. Two other males with him were released.
