Schools in Keyes were placed on a two-hour lockdown Monday afternoon as the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department investigated a shooting in the area.
The lockdown began around 1:30 p.m. after multiple reports of gunshots fired in the 5700 block of Eighth Street. As a precaution the schools were put on lockdown as deputies searched the area. The search did not turn up anything and deputies believed the incident had amounted to nothing, when they learned a gunshot victim showed up at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.
The man had come to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest. He is expected to survive his injuries. The Sheriff’s Department did not release any suspect information on the shooter.
The lockdown was lifted around 3:30 p.m.
Keyes Union School District Superintendent Helio Brasil released the following statement to parents, staff and community after the lockdown was lifted: “Thank you all very much for your support of our schools during this emergency lock down we experienced today. Thank you for trusting that kids were safe and our priority was to keep them from any harm. Thank you for cooperating and trusting our entire staff. Our staff, law enforcement officers and community did an amazing job of responding to this incident.”
