Two persons were arrested for assault with a deadly weapon after a knife was brandished during a Tuesday, Oct. 23 altercation in Smyrna Park.

Ceres Police were called out at 5:22 p.m. by the victim who told police that he was confronted by a group of people, of at least one he knew. The man asked the victim about a mutual acquaintance but didn’t want to talk and asked to be left alone. A verbal altercation ensued with the victim’s son walking over to ask what was going on. Police said that one man from the group, Mykel Roberts, 27, of Iowa, took a knife from his pocket and swung it at the victim. Gloria Welsh, 50, of Ceres, allegedly struck the victim twice in the face with her fist.

The attack ended when the victim’s dogs began biting both Roberts and Welsh in defense of their owner and the assailants retreated to their vehicles and left the park. They were stopped by police a short distance away. Welsh and Roberts were arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
