A 45-year-old Ceres man was arrested New Year’s Eve for allegedly firing his weapon and striking his neighbor’s house minutes after the new year arrived.

Ceres Police officers responded to a 12:23 a.m. report of a shot hitting a home in the 2700 block of Charlotte Avenue. The caller said his residence had been struck by gunfire moments earlier.

Officers found that a single round had entered the rear glass door of the residence and lodged into an interior wall. The bullet narrowly missed a family member who was inside the room at the time. No injuries were reported.

The investigation determined the gunfire likely originated from a residence in the 2700 block of Joy Avenue. Officers identified the home where shots had been fired from and located evidence. After obtaining a search warrant to search the house, officers recovered a short-barreled rifle and two handguns. Two of the recovered firearms were not registered, and the remaining firearm was not registered to the suspect or any other resident.

Juan Carlos Valencia Diaz, 45, of Ceres, was taken into custody and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center.

The investigation remains ongoing.
