CUSD seeks suggestions for naming of new school

Ceres Unified School District is seeking a name for its newest elementary school site.

"I hope the community is active in submitting viable names and speaking their opinion to the board prior to and during the selection process," said CUSD Supt. of Business Services Fred Van Vleck. "My hope is we don't let politics get in the way of selecting the best name and creating the best school we can."

His remark was a reference to the highly politicized 2009 board choice for the naming of Cesar Chavez Junior High School. The board took flak for straying from past practice of naming Ceres schools after people who had a direct impact on the education of Ceres students.

CUSD secured $20 million in funding for the construction of Elementary School #15 last December. Bruns Belmont Construction will complete the project.

"It's a hardship elementary school," Van Vleck said. "It's 100 percent funded by the state. We'll spend the whole amount."

Elementary School #15 will open its doors at Central and Grayson roads in the fall of 2014. The district will purchase the land on which the new school will be built within the month.

"We have a tentative agreement with the owner," Van Vleck said. "The process is moving forward."

Elementary School #15 will house 600 students.

The district will use the site for a traditional or magnet elementary school.

Magnet schools offer specialized courses.

"It's a discussion we've been having for the past few months," Van Vleck said. "We want to do what will best serve the students of Ceres. The board will make the final decision."

The deadline for submitting names for Elementary School #15 is Monday, Feb. 6.

Recommendations may be submitted via e-mail to nameschool@ceres.k12.ca.us. Please include name, address, phone number and reason why the name should be selected.

CUSD is publishing an ad on page 2 which contains a form for name suggestions. It may be filled out and faxed to (209) 537-7301 (attn: Linda Davis) or dropped off at the district office.
