Ceres will be hosting its third annual Relay for Life event sponsored by the American Cancer Society on May 17 and is inviting participants to join in a Kick Off event on Thursday, Jan. 31.

The informative gathering will be held at the Ceres American Legion Hall at 6 p.m. Those who personally wish to get involved or have their business involved in the Relay should attend.

"We are very proud of our community and the way it pulled together to raise nearly $100,000 over the event's first two years and the community involvement that took place", said Risse Keys.

The 24-hour Relay runs from Saturday, May 17 at Ceres High School until the next day. The Relay requires that at least one team member be walking or running on the track at any given time. Members signed up for half-hour increments and are allowed to walk, run or be wheeled in a wheelchair. The event also includes fun contests between teams.

The Relay also gives leaders a chance to celebrate those who have beat cancer, remember loved ones who died from the insidious disease and raises money for the fight against cancer.

This year's event has openings for volunteers at all levels and is of course still looking to grow more team participation from the community level.

"This year's theme is "Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back'," according to Michael Griffin, the American Cancer Society advocate.

Jill Hunt, the event chair for our Ceres Relay has been busy laying the groundwork for the 2008 event.

"Teams that start early are the teams that have the best advantage raising money and getting organized," said Keys.

All are invited to come and join in for a fun evening of life-saving significance. Light hors d'ouvres will served.
